MIJD September Activities

This month has been a busy one with lots of activities.  Here an account of my visits in the month of September, I apologize that they are brief, I could have written pages about each visit! J Enjoy

 Michigan

I was anxious to meet the girls in Michigan and enjoyed getting to know them over brunch.  I sat with some of the Grand Bethel girls and learned about their unique Grand Bethel.  Brunch was a breakfast buffet, and was complimented with ice cream for dessert, can’t go wrong there!  Plans for that evening included games and a sleepover at the temple in St. Ignace.  The games were a riot!  We had a name game to get to know our team, then we played ring toss, egg relay, limbo, had a three-legged relay, and a piñata to name a few.  I think the only reason we stopped was because the pizza arrived, and we were ready for it.  At dinner they announced the people who brought in the most pledge money for the HIKE, I was amazed at their figures, nice work Michigan!  For the rest of the night we did what any Jobie would do… stayed up and talked! (Who thought of the name sleepover?)  We ate junk food, did each other’s hair and talked about Jobies, school and of course, boys.

The actual bridge walk started the next morning (do I need to remind you we were going on only a couple hours of sleep?).  The walk has been a custom in Michigan for 49 years and little did I know that thousands of people gather to walk the bridge- five miles from start to finish.  We literally jumped out of the car to get to the meeting point, and once everyone arrived, the Job’s Daughters began the walk that they have done for years.  The traffic on the four lane bridge was reduced to two lanes until 10:00.  From then on, traffic could run on three lanes and the walkers were squished into one lane.  After 11:00, no walkers are allowed on the bridge.  It took about and hour and a half to walk the bridge, and I was basically jumping for joy when I got to the finish line.  The group met up again at Dairy Queen, I was happy to see that everyone survived and am looking forward to seeing the Michigan group again.

*Special thanks to Mom Smith, Leslie Shaw, and Mom and Dad Smiley for letting us stay at their houses while we were visiting Michigan, I appreciate your friendshipJ.

London, Ontario

Only my second trip out of the country, I was excited to be in Canada again.  Our official visit started at the council meeting, which started about seven.  It gave us, Erin Nicole, Denise Noonan and I, a chance to meet the council, who is very enthusiastic and involved.  We also met the Honored Queen, Emma and the Junior Princess, Jocelyn.  The four of us had fun comparing the differences in our Bethels and schools.  Over ice cream and apple crisp, we made plans to tour the area the next morning.

Heather and Anna Sutherland took us out to see the town.  I was introduced to Tim Horton’s- an amazing coffee/donut chain.  Fabulous coffee (I recommend the café mocha) so naturally there is one on every corner.  We had a chance to see some of the city of St. Thomas, and Jumbo.  Jumbo is a huge replica of an elephant of the Barnum and Bailey Circus who met his unfortunate demise there when he was hit by a train.  The city built a monument for him, and we got some cute pictures out of the deal.  My favorite part of the tour was when we went to Lake Eerie at Port Stanley.  The five of us went out to each and enjoyed a nice lunch in the city.

Supper that night was provided by the Bethel.  It was a potluck- which is always considered a hit in my book.  The meeting opened shortly after.  The girls were escorted in by the Junior and Senior Princess, followed by like Honored and Treasurer.  Even though there were only four girls, they did an awesome job throughout the meeting; each one of them knew their work, as well as the work of several other stations, I was very impressed.  Before the night was over, we exchanged email addresses and hopefully will keep in touch- they are a great group of girls!

International Day WA-BC

Mr. Reardon picked Denise Noonan and I up from the airport and treated us to a night on the town in Seattle.  We went downtown to a market place- Pike’s Market, where we wandered between fresh fruit, vegetables, and fish booths, crafts from all over the place and through some of the prettiest flower arrangements I have seen.  Soon we met up with Mrs. Reardon and did some shopping. The most interesting store was Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe (like a Ripley’s Believe it or Not) where we saw the world’s smallest shrunken head, and Stanley, a freakishly preserved mummy.  Finally we ate fantastic seafood and topped it off with coffee from Pikes Place, aka the first Starbucks.

If I had one word to describe this visit: friendship.  International Day is a dual meeting with the Grand Bethel Officers of Washington and the Composite Officers from British Columbia.  It has been a tradition for 35 years, and I was happy to be a part of such a beautiful thing.  They marched in to Coldplay, and played some great hits for escort and introductions- too cool!  My favorite part was the flag ceremony.  The Honored Queens had to be twins from separate mothers- Melissa and Mary Davis.  They were both left handed vegetarians from Bethel #27.  Both of them did an excellent job of presiding over the meeting.  I had a good chance to catch up with Stephanie Begin, MBCJD, Michelle Anderson MWJD, and Kim Garrett MUJD.  The four of us had a little too much fun together!

After the meeting, we met at the temple for lasagna dinner. Bowling started about 8:30 and lasted past 11:00.  What fun!  I didn’t bowl super great the first round, but did enjoy myself.  However, I did get two strikes- the very last frame of the second game.  I was going for three, and ended up getting a gutter ball on the very last try.

I changed into my pajamas when we got back to the temple for the sleepover.  I stayed up and chatted as long as I could, but soon my busy day caught up with me and I crashed about 1:30 am.  The next morning we woke up to bagpipe alarm, thank you Mr. Reardon…

*Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Reardon for opening up the city of Seattle and your house to me, I had a great time with you and hope to visit again!

Reno #2, Nevada

Our visit with the girls started with Reno’s council meeting.  They met in Mrs. Foster’s office and the girls went out for ice cream.  I wasn’t brave enough to try the Earthquake (8 scoops and 8 topping dessert) but enjoyed watching Mandie and Julia mow down on a Tremor.  I opted for a small version of the US Mint, and had a blast getting to know the girls in a casual setting.  The other part of our visit with Reno was their Bethel meeting on Thursday night.  It was one of their first meetings in their offices but it was obvious that they knew their ritual work.  I was glad to hear that their Bethel was growing as they read three petitions that night J  I was very impressed when their council was installed- they have a very large, supportive and active council that seems to work well together.  I am pumped to see the girls, and how their Bethel is doing at Rally in April- I am sure it will be going strong!

 Carson City #4 Nevada

Our visit with the Carson City girls began at their council meeting at a pizza place.  After we were done eating, we all seemed to rotate around the big round table to talk to different girls.  I was excited that there were prospects at the event- what a great way to bring in new girls.  Their official visit was on Wednesday night at the temple.  Cassie was a beautiful Honored Queen and it was good to see how well the two Bethels in that area worked together.  The meeting was extra special because Mrs. Machal and Mrs. Shelton received the Degree of Royal Purple- wow!  Erin Duskey, SBHQ presided over the ceremony and did a good job.  My favorite part was how they presented the medallions- their daughters approached the Altar and put it around their neck- how special!  I can’t wait to see them again at Rally in Las Vegas later this year.

Some of the sight seeing we did included a tour to Virginia City.  It is an old mining town that now is a tourist attraction.  Very old, very western, some of the buildings were well preserved and others were pretty modern.  Almost every place had one thing in common though- Slot Machines!  Our other tour was to Lake Tahoe, beautiful! It was incredibly deep and blue.  Our next section was right up to the beach, after that we went on a nature walk.  Erin Nicole, Cassie Shelton and I decided to do a little “off roading” and headed to the riverfront. Our final destination was to Emerald Bay, I really enjoyed seeing the little island with the tea house.  Thank you to Cassie, Mrs. Shelton, and Mrs. Machal for making our visit to Nevada so special!

 Phoenix, Arizona- Leadership Weekend

The leadership weekend was attended by a sizeable group of both daughters and adults.  The program and training the first night dealt with bridging the generation gap in Bethels, and dealing with conflict.  Mom Lawrence was the presenter and did a great job explaining the topics and analyzing the differences that cause issues in a Bethel.  Very informative and very fun!  We called it a night after a little socializing, and would continue the next morning at eight.

The program in the morning started after breakfast.  The first presentation was my favorite.  It was about the Language of Love- how people show love to one another in different ways.  Next we had a small group session with the girls; we talked mostly about promotion and planning terms, but there were many topics covered by the time we finished.  I found the hand out material to be informative and helpful.  Lunch was buffet style outside by the pool- it was a gorgeous day and we all enjoyed the sunshine.  Our session after lunch was probably the most informative and shocking.  The presenter talked about online predators and how MySpace is causing serious problems… pretty scary but imperative information to know- we need to be careful out there!  The final leadership session was held out by the pool.  We discussed conflict management and talked about the differences between jurisdictions.

Part of the fun that we had that weekend was at the Rustic Rooste where a party of about fifty met to eat.  The restaurant was complete with a slide, which the Supreme Guardian, Associate Supreme Guardian, Erin Nicole and I all went down.  It was a great time to what Jobies do best- socialize over a great meal!!

I hope that the interest in the Leadership Weekends continues to grow- it was an awesome time, and I learned a lot about myself, how I can be a better Job’s Daughter, and how to promote the Order.  Watch for information on the next Leadership Weekend held in Illinois March 16-18
