Indiana Grand Session, Montana, and California June 18 – June 30, 2008 Submitted by: Brittney Utley, Miss International Job’s Daughter 2007-08 While the rest of the Supreme team was at DeMolay International, I attended my final home Grand Session as a Daughter. My Bethel and I arrived at Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, on Wednesday, June 18. The weekend was filled with many familiar faces and tons of great times. On Thursday, I attended our GGC business meeting and participated in the formal opening. My Bethel worked on our incredible door decoration and did some bonding. Friday morning was our Grand Bethel luncheon, followed by the meeting, where I was elected Grand Bethel Guide! That means, in three years, if elected, I will be installed Grand Bethel Honored Queen! I am very excited and can’t wait to serve the Daughters of Indiana once again. Friday evening, we had formal banquet and awards. Then, Saturday morning was Grand Bethel installation, with Grand Guardian Council installation in the evening. The time in between was just about the only time the entire weekend I had to rest a little. By the time Sunday came around, everyone was tired. We said our goodbyes at the Memorial Service and went our separate ways. I was home for approximately fifteen hours before I hopped on a plane headed for Billings, Montana. After some difficulty, we made it to the Bethel meeting. Three girls received their Majority Ceremony. It seemed very befitting that we saw the Majority Ceremony at our last Bethel meeting as the Supreme Team. The Daughters all did a great job, even the new, young ones! The next day, we drove four hours up to Great Falls to meet with the council of that Bethel. We ate at Tony Roma’s. On Wednesday, we got on yet another plane and flew to Fresno, California. Jette and I arrived four hours before DH and MC, so we had some time to kill. We ate dinner and listened to the Fresno State fans as Fresno State University won the baseball College World Series. Mr. and Mrs. Hinnman picked up the four of us, and we drove to Visalia, where the California Grand Bethel was being held. It began on Thursday morning with the Miss California Job’s Daughter competition and other competitions. The opening was held that evening. I was amazed at the incredible number of Daughters present. We were told that nearly 2000 people were registered, which I found to be an incredible number because we hardly ever have that many people at Supreme Session! The rest of the weekend was filled with the meeting, announcement of new officers, and installation. Grand Bethel of California was a new experience for me. Everything was done so very differently from anything I have ever known. I was told that last year at Grand Bethel Bethels eligible to have a GB officer were announced. When those Bethels go back home, the Bethel Guardian Council selects two to three members to present to the Bethel. The Bethel then votes on who they would like to serve Grand Bethel. Once those names have been decided upon, the GG draws names out of a hat in a specific order to determine which people will fill which offices. Then, at Grand Bethel THIS year, the current Grand Bethel officers had an adorable way of announcing the new officers. Each person selected three to five people from the incoming officers and did something special to tell everyone else who the new officer was. I know that sounds confusing, but I think that is the best way I can explain it. The GBHQ, GBSP, and GBJP are done last and get blindfolded, while the current officers place fake crowns and capes on them to indicate who will fill which station. I enjoyed it. Following the installation of officers Saturday night, there was a dance. Since this was the very last event Jette and I would share as MIJD and SBHQ, we decided to really have tons of fun…and we did…until I took a stilletou heel to the top of my foot. When it immediately happened, I collapsed into Jette’s arms and seriously thought a bone was broken. When we were finally seen in first aid, my foot was already bruising, and I was in serious pain. After sitting there for about an hour with ice on my foot, I finally calmed down and managed to hobble back to bed with the help of DH and Jette. Dr. Jette did a great job of tending to me that evening – making sure my leg was propped up and getting ice for it! It was a crummy way to end our year, but I guess I had to take my turn getting hurt. I don’t believe I have ever been so happy to get home! My trip home was long and filled with three different planes, but I made it! I will truly enjoy the next four weeks until Supreme by being at home with my family and friends. Thank you all for an incredible year! I’ll see many of you atAustralia June 1 – 10, 2008Submitted by: Brittney Utley, Miss International Job’s Daughter Australia was a complete whirlwind! We left from New Jersey – the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Convention – and flew to LA, where we boarded a plane for Brisbane. The flight was 13 hours and 45 minutes long. It wasn’t really too bad. Jette and I took some Dramamine, and we were good to go! I watched a few movies and got about 7 hours of sleep. The best part of the flight was waking up to breakfast. I attempted to have some Raisin Bran cereal. However, the cereal bag had other plans. As I struggled for several minutes attempting to open this bag, it finally decided to open – in the form of an explosion of raisins and bran! There was absolutely nothing I could do, but laugh along with the 15 other people around me and accept my raisin bran back from the person in front of me as he handed it to me! It was definitely the highlight of the plane ride. Since the week went by so quickly, I will simply give a summary of all of our activities. I held a koala and pet kangaroos at Currumbin Wildlife sanctuary! Jette and I learned that animals are WAY bigger in Australia – pelicans and crocodiles for instance. The Nelson family was absolutely wonderful to us the entire week. They took us into their home and treated us just like family. It was great! The rest of the week was filled with tons of sightseeing, shopping, barbeques, and Tim Tam Slammers! We attended the jurisdictional meeting, as well as the Official Visit of the Townsville Bethel, and the hike for HIKE. I’ll let the pictures tell the rest! Bethel

After being home for only three days, I jetted off to New Jersey, where I learned that Masons can party! Whew! I had not heard of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon until being selected this year. Boy, have we been missing out! The convention was held in Wildwood, New Jersey on the beautiful Atlantic shore. When we arrived Thursday evening, we immediately changed for the Hawaiian Luau. The dinner was absolutely amazing, but what followed what equally incredible. For the entertainment, Hawaiian dancers performed for us. I have never seen Hawaiian dancing in person, so it was definitely a sight! To top everything off, four gentlemen competed in a dance off. Oh my goodness! I don’t believe I have ever laughed so hard at older gentlemen dancing! Jette and I called it an early night since we had to be up bright and early at 7:00 am!
For the first time all year, I overslept on Friday morning! But it was okay, because I had 45 minutes after breakfast to get ready. Whew! We attended a women’s luncheon and met the Tall Cedars’ poster child, Claire. She is absolutely incredible. After lunch, we went for a bike ride with the IMC, Austin, and got a bit sunburned. That evening we watched the drill and clown competitions and laughed a bunch!
Saturday morning was a parade around Wildwood. The rest of the day was pretty relaxed until the formal dinner. After that, a bunch of us walked along the boardwalk and rode a super fun roller coaster!

Jette and I had an extra weekend, so we planned to make up for the Supreme Visit that we missed in November. After much communication with Mrs. Morris, we set up our weekend visit. For the first time this year, it was just us girls. Mrs. Morris picked us up at the airport Friday afternoon, and we drove to the Masonic Conference Center – Patton Campus in Elizabethtown, PA. This facility, along with the entire Masonic Village, is absolutely incredible! I was in awe of the space that had been set aside for the youth groups’ special use.
On Friday night, we got acquainted with the campus and our awesomely huge loft! Once everyone arrived, the movie “Nancy Drew” was set up on a projection screen in the gym. I enjoyed the movie and the glow sticks that came along with it! Afterwards, the whole crew gathered in the multimedia room for the weekend rules. Jette and I decided to play our own little “mystery.” We told everyone that we were Nicole and Rachelle, who used to live in Pennsylvania before our fathers (we were cousins) were deployed to the Philippines. The people who already knew us got a kick of it, and those who didn’t found it so cool and interesting!
However, by Saturday morning, the trick was over. We had to get all dressed up for the Grand Bethel meeting. There was no hiding our true identity at that point. The crowns don’t act as good masks! I was fascinated by the meeting. Many aspects of the meeting were very different from those I have seen before. In the floorwork, we saw many triangles made – including the triangle, which the rest of us know as the semicircle. Pennsylvania is also the only Grand Bethel to have a person’s name proceeding “Grand Bethel.” Therefore, it is known as the Mary Etta Wright Grand Bethel of Pennsylvania. Quite a mouthful! The highlights of the rest of the day were – learning to sign “Nearer My God to Thee,” a video scavenger hunt, and the life size Clue game. All of the Daughters seemed to have tons of fun, including myself! Perhaps Renee, the GBHQ, didn’t have the same amount of fun considering she spent much of the evening raising money for HIKE to get back her ransomed monkey.
By Sunday morning, it was time to go to the chapel for church service, eat breakfast, and pack to leave. It was a short weekend, but filled with terrific memories and oodles of fun. With each trip, I’m looking more and more forward to seeing all of the friends I have made this year again at Supreme!

Jette and I arrived in BWI on Thursday, where DH picked us up. We drove down to his house to pick up his daughter, son, and two other DeMolay. Then, we made the three and a half hour drive to Ocean City. We got to watch Madagascar and Cars on the ride! Once we arrived at the Princess Royale hotel, we checked in and headed straight for the pool party! We had a lot of fun with the girls, and I was excited to see some familiar faces from our previous visit.
Friday morning, bright and early, we ate breakfast…then slept some more! We finally did get out of bed and joined the other girls for kite making. We were supposed to fly them afterwards, but it was too rainy. I was very disappointed! The rest of the afternoon consisted of relaxation (AKA sleeping for Jette) and perusing the boardwalk. Before I knew it, it was time to eat dinner and get ready for formal opening! Formal opening was fun and went off without a hitch. Jette and I had a great time, before being escorted in, just hanging out with the other “Quad Squad” royalty! After opening was complete, everyone got comfortable in jeans and headed to mini golf and pizza. That was another great time! Jette and I didn’t golf, but we did eat pizza and frog cake (yum!) and met some more girls. Before I knew it, it was time to go back to the hotel and hit the sack …well, in this case, the Tempurpedic bed!
Saturday got a little spoiled by the rain, but we still had an awesome day. In the morning, we shared many laughs with the Miss Grand Session contestants. This is not your average “pageant.” Several gentleman, and some girls, dressed up as their Bethels favorite storybook characters! You can only imagine the laughter! Following the announcement of those winners, (Little Bo Peep and all of her sheep won, by the way) we were entertained by those competing in the talent and choral competition. The sand creations were unfortunately cancelled. The formal awards banquet took place that evening, where the Daughters were excitedly recognized for all of their accomplishments in the vast array of weekend competitions. Immediately following, the new Grand Guardian Council officers were installed and the new GGC year began. There was a dance and a movie afterwards. Jobies do love any opportunity to dance!

On Sunday, I headed back home. Before leaving the hotel, however, we attended the morning worship service. It was lovely and the Miss Maryland did a great job on her sermon. Check out time came around far too soon, and I was sad to leave my new friends. It was for a good cause though. I was able to make it home in time to share a Mothers’ Day dinner with my momma. I hope all of the mothers out there enjoyed their special day!

Submitted by: Brittney Utley, Miss International Job’s Daughter What a terrific way to begin the month of May! After all of the difficulty I had finding a flight out of Louisville, Kentucky on Derby weekend, I managed to make it to Council Bluffs, Iowa. We arrived Friday afternoon and attended the meeting of Bethel 1 in Council Bluffs. They served us a delicious dinner prior to the meeting, and we were able to see many familiar faces. The meeting was nice. They performed a wonderful Mother Mick Ceremony in a diary entry format. Saturday was a very early morning. I rode with the Bethel to the state park where the Mid-America HIKE was held. It was a chilly morning, to say the least. DH, our Mr. Eagle Scout, built us a hefty fire, along with some help from the other men. It warmed up fairly quickly. The Hike was truly a hike. It was a little more than a mile, and at the top of the hill, you could see all four states! It was super neat! Hot dogs were served after the awards were handed out. I was extremely impressed to hear that over $6,000 was raised for HIKE through the Mid-America Hike! Keep it up ladies! It was fabulous to see the friends we had already met in Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri. It makes me very excited an anxious for Supreme Session! Denise Noonan was able to be there for the weekend, and being a fellow Hoosier, I was beyond thrilled to be with her. We were able to make it back to the hotel so I could watch our famous Kentucky Derby. However, the ending was very sad. For those who are unfamiliar with the outcome of the race, the runner – up horse, the filly (a female horse), Eight Belles, broke her front ankles after she crossed the finish line and had to be euthanized on the track. I was in tears. I haven’t seen such a devastating outcome before. The winner of the race was the favorite to win, Big Brown. Since I do actually live in Louisville, Kentucky (about ten minutes from Churchill Downs – where the race is run), I’ll give you some background on how big of a deal the event is for our city. Are you ready for this? We get out of school for Oaks Day, the day before Derby! The festivities begin three weeks before with Thunder Over Louisville, the largest fireworks show in North America, to kick it all off. From then to the first Saturday in May, our city is swarmed with celebrities and tourists. It is a fun and thrilling time for us. Enough with horse racing. I was treated to a trip to the Omaha Zoo on Sunday. It was fun to see all of the animals, the penguins were my favorite! I finally made it home after many hours of traveling at 11:30 that night. April – Colorado, Utah, Alaska, Wyoming Submitted by: Brittney Utley, Miss International Job’s Daughter After a much needed “spring break,” we set back out on the road on April 16. Our first stop along the trip was Colorado. Much to my surprise, I received quite a weather shock! It was snowing! Now this concept of snow in April is completely foreign to me. I just didn’t get it! But I had to grin and bear it – while everyone else laughed because I was so flabbergasted. Our visit to Colorado was quite nice though. We were welcomed with a gathering of many Jobies and adults alike. I was in awe of the magnificent signing choirs and the confidence the girls showed while they signed the lyrics. That evening, Jette and I stayed with the GBHQ, while the adults stayed with Miss Martha, the GG. Oh boy, did she have plenty to say about Jette and her experiences at Wyoming’s Jobie Camp last July. The next day was full of sightseeing in Estes Park and the Stanley Hotel. After much driving, we ate dinner at the Shrine Club’s restaurant, The Oasis. The gentlemen even treated us to a personal bagpipe concert. Actually, they were just practicing, but they did let us sit in and watch. It was so cool!
By Friday morning, it was time to head out to Utah. First thing in the morning, I learned of an earthquake back home. This never happens! Luckily, no major damage was done and everyone I knew of was okay. The highlight of our first day in Utah was bowling. There were about 80 Jobie people in one bowling alley sharing fun and friendship! It was a great way to get to meet some of the girls and show them a thing or two about bowling! On Saturday, the VGG took the Miss Utah, Michelle, and me out to lunch at the Cheesecake Factory. It was delicious! We walked around the mall for a little while before heading back to the hotel to pick up our sickly Jette. Once we did, we went to the Masonic Temple for Bethel skit competition. Eleven Bethels competed, and MC, DH, Jette and I were judges. Talk about major competition! All of the Bethels did such a great job, and I was very impressed with the size of the Bethels. Following the skits, we went to dinner at the Spaghetti Factory and returned to the Temple for a joint Bethel meeting of Bethels 1 and 5. Both Bethels did very well. They even had drums for our escort line! It was super cool! Sunday was nothing but a travel day. We arrived in Alaska at 9:30 p.m., which was 1:30 a.m. back home. I was shocked to see that it was still light outside! We didn’t do much of anything since it was already late. The next morning, we woke up bright and early to head up the mountains to a glacier! We spent over an hour playing around on this massive piece of ice. It was quite possibly the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. We climbed all over the place, and I fell several times into knee high snow. I absolutely loved it! That evening after dinner, we went to Beluga point. The sun was just setting and the Pacific Ocean and mountains were picturesque! The fun didn’t stop there! Tuesday was just as exciting. We drove 2 hours to a town called Talkeetna to get in a little seven passenger plane and fly up to Mt. McKinley. Again, something I never thought I would do, but the entire one hour flight took my breath away. We finished up the day with the Bethel meeting of Bethel 1 in Anchorage. They did a nice job and were very welcoming. Jette and I were pro-tem Third Messenger and Junior Princess. It was fun to do my home station! The next day we went whale watching! We were able to see about 10-12 Orca whales (aka. Free Willy). They were positively beautiful! That evening, we had dinner with the Bethel Guardian and her daughter.
We flew out late Thursday night and arrived in Denver, Colorado, where Jette’s mom, Gayle, and Dave Roblee picked us and drove us to Cheyenne. Friday was pretty much a lazy day. I had my first experience with Taco John’s #6 Chicken and fell in love! Yumm!!! Friday night was the state progressive dinner. We started out at Arby’s for appetizers and drinks, then moved to Subway for the main course, and finished up at Dairy Queen. They even tried to lock us in once they closed! Saturday was a fun day. Jette, DH, Gayle, and I had planned to go horseback riding that morning, but it was snowing! Imagine that. So we went to lunch at Olive Garden and had tons of fun getting ready for the formal dinner with the Junior Miss, Chrysta, and GBHQ, Ashlee. Ask them how to do the cupid shuffle! Dinner was wonderful, and everyone looked swell all dressed up! After presentations, a murder mystery ensued! It was fun watching everyone act out the parts! Unfortunately, Jette and I had to leave early to make the 2 hour drive back to Casper. Gayle and Jette say that it was snowing like crazy with black ice all over the place. I wouldn’t know considering I was OUT the entire time! Sunday was Jette’s special day. Her best friend did our hair bright and early that morning, and we headed to her reception. She was very nervous and anxious, but everything turned out wonderfully! It was awesome to see the incredible outpouring of love that people had for her. She said she couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day. Thank you, Wyoming, for making it so special for her! I spent a couple of extra days in Casper, and they took me to Thermopolis – the world’s largest mineral hot springs! It was so nice to relax in the giant hot tubs! By Tuesday, it was time for our second longest trip of the year to come to an end, and I headed home for two days! [WY PICS TO
COME! ] Submitted by: Brittney Utley, Miss International Job’s Daughter What a wonderful weekend! I flew into Las Vegas in the early afternoon on Friday, February 29, 2008. Talk about a rare opportunity! I was able to enjoy the 75 degree weather by the pool. The sun was great compared to our 35 degree sun! That evening was spent at the Lodge with the 20+ Daughters serving a Masonic Family dinner. The meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans were delicious! Afterwards, we were able to spend some time with the Daughters, while the adults had a council meeting. Saturday was a busy day! There was a wonderful meeting at 1:00 p.m., complete with a beautiful Mother Mick Ceremony in honor of her birthday. I was thoroughly impressed with the filled stations, plus choir. We were told that they have 27 Daughters, with a strong Jobie to Bee program! So here is your challenge Job’s Daughters! Let’s race to see which jurisdictions can build the most Bethels with 20+ active members! Ready, set, go! The afternoon was spent singing “Cary-okey” and eating another great meal! That evening, I was able to see the strip and the Hoover Dam. I was very excited to be able to see these sites, despite the short amount of time I was in town. On Sunday, DH, MC, and Jette left early in the morning, but my flight wasn’t until midnight. So I was able to spend the day relaxing and finishing up some journaling and other tasks. I arrived home bright and early Monday morning! March 2008 – Missouri, Illinois, Indiana – MIJD Reception, Florida, ASG Reception Submitted by: Brittney Utley, Miss International Job’s Daughter Oh, Mini Session! If you want to have a fun weekend, be sure to visit Missouri for their annual Mini Session, organized by the Grand Bethel Honored Queen. I had a time getting there…At home, we had a major snow storm. By major, I mean 12 inches of snow by means of a blizzard on Saturday morning, March 8. My plane was scheduled to leave at 7:30 am, but I didn’t manage to get off the ground for about three hours! It was miserable! When I did finally arrive in Missouri, I was greeted by tons of girls swarming the Bass Pro Shop! They were all frantically trying to complete a scavenger hunt. Jette and I were stationed at the barber shop. It was very funny to see groups of Daughters walk upstairs, look around and say, “This isn’t it!” Before leaving, Jette and I stocked up on fudge and left to check into our hotel. Dinner consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs, and fellowship. The highlight of the evening was a lip-synching contest. All of the Bethels did such a great job and made it very entertaining for us, the judges, to watch! The theme for the songs was 1940s. The contest was followed by a very fun dance! Sunday was final day of Mini Session. We attended a worship service, awards were given, and the Bethels announced the winners of the raffles. Neither Jette nor I won a raffle. Sad times. We had a long drive ahead of us, so Jette, DH, and I jumped into the car and set out for Peoria Illinois. We stopped at Steak n’ Shake and met more Missouri girls there! We made one more detour to the St. Louis Arch. It was awesome! In Illinois, we enjoyed several great days with Tom and Carol Sapp. We did a lot of shopping and eating. However, Jette and I have no idea what cookies are! Carol Sapp and Linda Vierling took all of us ladies to Her Majesty’s English Tea Room. The restaurant was filled with crowns and queen memorabilia. We drank several different teas and enjoyed little snacks. It was such a fun girls day out! That evening, we met with others for around the state for a delicious meal. We had tons of fun with the Daughters! The next day, Tom Sapp took all of us to Springfield, IL. We stopped at a humbling Lincoln’s tomb and visited his home. We toured the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library. This museum is incredible! I recommend that anyone in the area visit! You must see the ghosts in the library! In the evening, about 30 people came over to the Sapp’s house for a dinner. We played Apple’s to Apple’s with the Daughters and did tons of laughing. DH, Jette, and I drove to Louisville (home) so that I could get ready for my reception. We drove to Indianapolis on Friday afternoon for a pizza and fun game night. I was ecstatic to see everyone from home and spend some time playing board games and Twister! MC played a thrilling round of Twister with Jette and me! Saturday was a whirlwind day! We toured the Indianapolis 500 Speedway, as well as the Scottish Rite Cathedral. It is our pride and joy! We attended an Official Visit at the Grand Lodge Building, which is directly across the street from the Cathedral. Four Bethels helped to initiate a brand new Daughter! I dressed in my Miss Indiana regalia for the meeting, which made me as happy as could be! After being jittery all day, the evening finally arrived. My reception was a dream! It was beautiful and enjoyable. I was surrounded by all of the people I love! I was extremely surprised to be named an Honorary Hoosier. Since I actually live in Kentucky, but belong to Job’s Daughters in Indiana, I have always considered myself a Hoosier at heart. Now I can actually call myself one! I was also honored to be escorted through an arch of steel by the Grand Master of Indiana. Then, everyone danced the night away! It was truly a magical evening! I was able to spend about a week at home and enjoy Easter with my family. I left again the day after Easter for sunny Florida! We visited all three Bethels there – Tampa, West Melbourne, St. Petersburg. Jette and I spent time with a friend in Florida. She took us to Cocoa Beach and on an airboat to see alligators. Thursday, Jette, DH, and I spent the day at Disney world with Jan, the Supreme Deputy. I really enjoyed the warm weather and the tiny tan line I have now! After two hours of sleep Thursday night, the three of us went to the airport for a six a.m. flight. We landed in Baltimore and spent the afternoon with DH’s family, until my Dad arrived. Saturday, we did sightseeing. The evening brought DH’s reception. Jette and I had fun telling about the exciting moments we’ve had on the road with DH. Sunday, Dad and I drove ten hours all the way home! Now, I’m just getting started on my two week break!
FEBRUARY TRAVELSHappy St. Patrick’s Day! The last month has been another whirlwind! It all began when I was preparing to leave for Idaho on February 2. 48 hours before my flight is scheduled to leave, I find out that the Idaho trip has been cancelled due to excessive snow. Excessive snow!?! I’m not even sure what that means, seeing as I come from an area where we have had only nine inches of snow this winter (which seems like a lot compared to the last couple of years)! Luckily, I was able to get my flights changed around, and I flew to Portland, Oregon on February 3 instead. Jette and I thoroughly enjoyed the football game in our hotel room. GO GIANTS! Oregon was beautiful, despite some cloudy days.
Jette and I were able to meet many wonderful Daughters and shared many
laughs. Here are some highlights: Jette rolled down a snow covered hill;
we saw one of the tallest waterfalls in the country (GORGEOUS!!); I
found my future home when we visited the Pittoch Mansion; we went
bowling for Mardi Gras, we visited two different and enjoyed a beautiful
ceremony performed by the Grand Bethel; figured out how to take one
incredible cape photograph; and so much more! I also was able to get to
church on Ash Wednesday, so when you see the pictures, it is not just a
black smudge; it’s a cross! I really enjoyed my time in Oregon, and
who can forget: The next stop on the trip was Washington…just right across the river from some of the scenic views we took in while in Oregon (kinda!). Jette and I were able to do many things here that we never would have dreamed of: we saw guys toss fish (?!?!) at the Pike Fish Market; we stared into the pure blue Puget Sound, made a video, and found out which direction we had to face to see home…all from atop the Space Needle; we took a way cool ferry ride (that you drove right on to! Big trucks and everything!) on the Puyalllup (I decided it was fun to pronounce it “pull – ya’ll – up”); we visited a Bethel and ate incredible salmon and had a blast spending time with the Daughters of Washington! It was one trip I will never forget.
From Washington, we drove a very short distance to
the suburbs of Vancouver, British Columbia. For one weekend, we had a
great time. Jette and I enjoyed a rare commodity – a hot tub! We
watched some good movies and were treated to superb Bethel meeting on
Sunday. The visit was far too short, but was filled with great memories! I was able to be home for just a couple days to prepare for everyone to visit my home! MC, DH, and Jette arrived sporadically on February 14 and 15. Jette, my boyfriend, and I spent a lovely Valentine’s Day together at a Japanese steakhouse. The next day, Jette and I had pictures made together. We had more fun than you can imagine simply taking pictures. I can’t wait for everyone to see them! That evening was the Supreme Visit of Bethel 18, Louisville, KY. Jette and I were privileged to fill in as 3rd and 4th Messengers for the initiation (our first of the year) of four young ladies. It was a packed house as we welcomed these Daughters as the newest members of Job’s Daughters International. Since my Bethel is right across the river (about a 25 minute drive), many of the officers of Bethel 18 are dual members of my Bethel. So the opportunity to participate in their meeting was a great one. There were also many members of my Indiana Grand Family present, as well. These incredible Daughters and adults honored me with a certificate declaring my place among the Kentucky Colonels. This is a great honor bestowed on those who have made a significant contribution to the community, to Kentucky, and to the nation. Needless to say, I was extremely touched and filled with tears. It was great to be home! Ask DH how excited he was to receive a personalized Louisville Slugger bat!
The next day, my Dad and I drove Jette and DH to a couple of Indiana Official Visits. Jette and I were, once again, able to fill in. However, I began to drastically lose my voice, so Jette forbid me from speaking at the second O.V. and made my remarks for me! The following day marked the beginning of the North American Conference of Grand Masters of Masons in Louisville. We set up a promotional display and spent much of the day seeing a few familiar faces and meeting many more. On Monday, Jette and I addressed the crowd of a few hundred on behalf of Job’s Daughters International. For the rest of the day, we were able to meet many more Grand Masters and Grand Lodge officers. I was beyond thrilled to see gentlemen from Russia, England, Iran, and Mexico, just to name a few. Later in the day, Jette and I gave a power point presentation about Job’s Daughters. We received many good responses and even had some interest shown in states where Job’s Daughters does not exist, such as Georgia and Alabama. Tuesday was shut down day. It was sad to leave, but I do look forward to possibly seeing Grand Masters in jurisdictions where we have yet to visit! Jette unfortunately had to leave Monday night, and DH and MC left Tuesday night. I was able to spend some quality time at home before my next trip – Las Vegas! Stay tuned for the next edition to hear about my adventures th
Michigan, Ontario, New Mexico, and ArizonaSubmitted by: Brittney Utley, Miss International Job’s Daughter Back on the road again! I had such a wonderful month at home with Christmas, New Years, catching up with friends, and enjoying family. The first trip back out took me to Michigan. It was quite a cold shock for me, but I made sure to pack plenty of scarves and a great pair of gloves! We arrived in Flint on Friday, January 11, where I managed to arrive with no luggage! However, we were briskly swept away to Frankenmuth, where we ate a wonderful meal at the Bavarian Inn. There were about 50 people there to welcome us to Michigan and share our meal. Jette and I had a bit too much fun at dinner with the GBHQ and Supreme Bethel Officers! What a hoot! On the way back to the Smiley’s home, we stopped by the airport because my luggage finally arrived. Talk about a huge sigh of relief! On Saturday, we attended a very special dinner and Bethel installation in Grand Rapids. The dinner was to honor Michigan’s Supreme Officers and those who serve on Supreme committees. Jette and I received a myriad of orange gifts (the GBHQ’s favorite color) in Disney Princess gift bags, which we enjoyed very much. The food was delicious, and the company was equally as wonderful! Installation immediately followed the dinner. The ceremony was different from what I am used to, and I loved it! The ambiance was beautiful! It was extra special because Katie’s, the GBHQ, sister was being installed Honored Queen. Afterwards, there was tons of dessert, so we ate… again! [ Sunday was a very lazy day for Jette and I, so there isn’t much to remark on there. Monday, however, was much more eventful. We drove to Guelph, Ontario to visit Bethel 6. Once we got to the hotel, Jette and I were beyond pleasantly surprised when we received a complimentary suite upgrade. It was pretty ‘suite!’ We had two hours to enjoy our suite, during which Jette and I played on the Wii that I got for Christmas! Then, we all took a tour of the city, while trying to find our dinner restaurant. Eventually we found it and enjoyed the fellowship of the Bethel. There meeting began around 7:30. It was a stop and go meeting because it was their first since installation. I must add that they had over 120 people at their installation! Way to go, girls! Keep up the awesome work! We crossed the border back into the US the next morning, and enjoyed lounging around at the Smiley’s for the rest of the day. Wednesday was an extremely early morning! Our flights left right around 7 a.m. DH and I flew to Dallas-Fort Worth and on to Albuquerque, NM. In the mean time, Jette and MC flew to Atlanta and on to Albuquerque. The day was quite uneventful, with the exception of our walk to Fudrucker’s for dinner. Thursday, however, was more eventful. Unfortunately, Jette wasn’t feeling well because of her wisdom tooth. MC, DH, and I went sightseeing during the day. That evening, Bethel 4 of Rio Rancho held their regular meeting. The meeting was the first one since their installation. The eleven year old Honored Queen did a good job running a smooth meeting. We enjoyed a wonderful southwestern meal after the meeting and got to know the energetic girls a bit more! I felt very welcomed and at home. Thank you, New Mexico! By Friday, we had to catch a flight to Tucson, Arizona. We were greeted warmly and promptly taken to Macaroni Grill for lunch. Jette and I were amazed at how warm the weather was! We had just come from 20 degree weather into 60 degree weather! Brenna, the GBHQ, thought that we were crazy! The rest of the afternoon was spent getting to know Brenna, Nancy, and the rest of Brenna’s family. We went to Costco, where Jette and I learned that we fit in one of the Costco carts! Then we did some shopping at the mall. Jette and I each bought a new suitcase. They are too perfect! That evening we learned about a new event – a swap meet. Neither Jette nor I had ever heard of one, but we learned that it is basically like a giant yard sale. Jette found a purse that she absolutely adored! Somehow, I managed to keep my wallet in check! Saturday morning was wonderful! Bethels 2 and 25 of Tucson held a joint meeting in honor of the Supreme Visit. The Bethels worked so well together and impressed us all. They have great support of the Lodges in the area, which they benefit from greatly! The coolest part of the ceremony was the closing Cross. Most Bethels in Arizona turn on a black light during the Cross. I was awestruck to see the beauty of the glowing robes in contrast to the Altar light! During lunch, I was introduced to Arizona’s own, yummy Eegee’s. They are similar to an icy or snow cone. Following lunch, we visited the Desert Museum. I was astounded by how many different shades of brown can be found in the desert. I am so used to very grassy and green environments, and I was thrilled to be introduced to a totally new landscape. Of course, the weather was beautiful! Once we were all done touring, everyone traveled back to the Lodge for dinner, games, and fun. Dinner was classic Mexican and absolutely scrumptious! Jette and I had some free time to get to know and converse with Teirnee and Lori, Past MIJD and Past SBHQ, from Arizona. Then, I learned how to play Apples to Apples and played an amazing game of Jobie Jeopardy! I was lucky enough to have an outstanding winning team! The night was topped off by a show at the Gaslight Theatre. The entertainment couldn’t have been more hilarious, and the popcorn throw/catch attempts made it even better! However, it made for a very late night. Luckily, we didn’t have to get up super early Sunday morning. We woke up at 10 a.m. for breakfast, and Jette’s grandparents arrived to pick her up. I was sad to see her go, but excited that she was able to spend time with her grandparents because it has been quite a while since she has seen them.
Brenna, Nancy, and I met Teirnee and Lori for lunch and once again, enjoyed their company. Later in the afternoon, we visited Brenna’s family and were treated to another great meal. I picked an orange directly from a tree! I have never seen an orange tree in person, so I was ecstatic! Unfortunately, I had to call it an early night because my flight home left at 8 a.m. the next morning. It felt great to be home again! Have a great Valentine’s Day, everyone! Love, November and December – Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, Ohio, and Florence, KYSubmitted by: Brittney Utley, Miss International Job’s Daughter Happy Holidays! I hope everyone enjoyed a scrumptious Thanksgiving meal! Christmas is rapidly approaching, and I wonder how many people have their Christmas shopping finished! I don’t, that’s for sure! The day after Thanksgiving, I hopped on a non-stop flight to BWI airport. For the first time, I did not have to fly to Chicago O’Hare airport! It was so nice! I met up with Dad Hoglund, Mom Coley, and Mom Maureen, and we drove to Williamsburg, Virginia. We immediately had to change clothes to get ready for a dinner. So I threw on a skirt and ate a delicious vegetarian pasta buffet. The rest of the evening consisted of a very fun dance with the pageant contestants and alternates. I called it an early night though because I woke up very early to join in the crazy shopping activities! The next day was my birthday! I turned the big 1-9! Since I couldn’t be at home, Colonial Williamsburg was a great place to celebrate instead. The town is wonderfully restored to the former glory of the Colonial period. It was wonderful to walk around the town and know what important events took place there. Saturday night the actual pageant took place. It was well organized and wonderfully executed. There was a fifes and drums band that played. It depicted the historical background of the area and gave all the visitors an opportunity to witness that history. The new Miss Virginia is Natalie, and the new Miss Virginia Congeniality is Victoria. They will both do a terrific job representing Job’s Daughters. Congratulations to Tara who had a beautiful and successful year. On Sunday, we were honored to witness the Supreme Visit meeting with Honored Queens and Senior Princesses filling each station. It was an exquisite site and all of the Daughters showed very high personal standards through the beauty and perfection of their work. It was sad to leave, but our days in Virginia were not quite over. Later that afternoon, we went to Jamestown to learn even more about the founding of our great country. After that, we called it a day and drove back to Dad Hoglund’s house in Maryland. Monday was a lazy day, as far as the morning goes. We drove to Delaware in the early afternoon and attended a Bethel meeting that night. The meeting was fun, and I enjoyed observing the differences between Indiana and Delaware.
Tuesday was full of even more history in Philadelphia, PA. We visited Independence Hall (they really did film National Treasure there!), the Liberty Bell, Ben Franklin’s grave, and Sonny’s Famous Steaks. It was absolutely incredible to stand in the very room where our founders signed the Declaration of Independence, especially after just having visited Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg. There was a potluck dinner that night, whereat I ate too much food! We did some shopping at a local mall for a bit also.
Wednesday was a visit to Valley Forge and a
Bethel meeting. I was so excited to be able to do Inner Guard for the
meeting. Sometime it is just wonderful to be able to be a regular
Daughter and sit in a robe like normal…well, Jobie normal! Thursday was very exciting! We had a VIP tour of the U.S. Capitol! A Past Grand Guardian of Maryland showed us around, and we learned a great deal. We actually got to stand on the floor of the House of Representatives! That is an opportunity that not many people get, so I feel very lucky! We ate lunch at Union Station and learned how much fun it can be to ride the Metro!
Thursday night was a Bethel meeting in Maryland. It was awesome to see the near perfect ritual work and hear about how active the Bethel is in the community. It was also great to see some more familiar faces. I met a couple of people from the Louisville area; what a small world! Needless to say, we talked for a long time! On Friday, we visited Inner Harbor in Baltimore and saw Fort McHenry. Fort McHenry is where Francis Scott Key had the inspiration to write the Star Spangled Banner. It was truly a touching experience. Later that day, we headed to our hotels where we stayed for the weekend. I was lucky enough to stay in a penthouse with the Miss Maryland, Miss Maryland Congeniality, and a Past Grand Bethel Honored Queen. We had so much fun eating, having Skittles fights, staying up late, and getting TP’d. The weekend was wonderful. Becky (Miss Maryland) and Kara (Miss Congeniality) let me help out with the pageant activities on Saturday. I really enjoyed getting to know all of the girls. Congratulations to Lacey and Carri, Miss Maryland and Miss Maryland Congeniality. Welcome to the Quad Squad!!! Becky and Kara, you served Maryland very well. Enjoy your time to relax now! After pageant, there was a terrific dance, complete with Santa! I had a blast! On Sunday morning, a beautiful meeting done by the Maryland Honor Bethel was held. They all did a splendid job! After the meeting, we rushed out very quickly to make it to the airport on time! The December travels were not finished in Maryland though. The next weekend, my Dad very sweetly volunteered to drive me up to Columbus, Ohio for the Supreme Visit. Ohio organized an adorable and fun version of “Don’t forget the lyrics.” We had to remember the words to different Job’s songs, Christmas songs, and T.V. theme songs. It was quite hilarious. I believe the girls ended up beating the adults! The entertainment was followed by cookies and punch. The next day, we were treated to a breathtaking performance of The Nutcracker. I have not seen it for a very long time, so I was thrilled to see it again. The Ohio Theater was absolutely breathtaking, as well. The weekend was very relaxing and enjoyable. Thank you to everyone who helped to make the weekend a great experience! The next day was Monday, of course, and we visited Bethel 19 of Florence, KY. They treated us to a great pot-luck meal, while we shared magnificent fellowship. Immediately following dinner, I changed into a robe, and we all headed into the meeting. I was able to be the Guide, which is also my station in my Bethel until December 15. Another girl from my Bethel and her parents actually came to help out Bethel 19! It is always so awesome to see faces from home during my travels! I was also able to catch up with Amanda Centers, Past Miss International Job’s Daughter. The meeting went well, and they read a petition! They are definitely on their way to re-building their membership. After the meeting, I was able to ride with the people from my Bethel all the way back home! Granted, it was only a one and a half hour drive, but I still loved the company! These trips were quite tough without Jette. She was unable to go due to a back injury, and she was seriously missed! I ask everyone to pray for her speedy recovery, so she can join us back on the road as soon as possible. Indiana needs many many prayers right now. We are experiencing numerous trials, and I assure you that we have well surpassed the “bad things happen in three” curse. My heart goes out to everyone going through difficult times and losses during this Holiday Season. May you all find the peace of our newborn Savior. God Bless, Published as received
October – South Dakota, Nebraska, KansasSubmitted by: Brittney Utley, Miss International Job’s Daughter Hello Jobie World! I arrived home from a wonderful trip to South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas on Halloween! It was a little bit scary to fly on Halloween (just a little superstition!), but I made it home safe and sound! South Dakota was our first stop on the trip. I flew into a quaint little airport in Sioux Falls. I was quite surprised to see so many signs welcoming hunters. Apparently, it was just the beginning of a major hunting season for some type of animal (a bird, I think!). For several hours after Jette and I landed, we settled into our hotel and just relaxed. Later in the day, we visited The Falls. They were absolutely beautiful! Waterfalls have always been my favorite aspect of nature. The sounds and sights astound me every single time! After enjoying the falls and downtown shopping, we met the girls and adults of Bethels 1, 17, and 38, all of Sioux Falls, at the Masonic Center for a pizza party. The pizza was delicious! Following the pizza, we toured the center, while the Daughters practiced for the meeting that took place the next day. Jette and I ended the wonderful day in a most perfect way….a hot tub! The next day in Sioux Falls, we visited the USS South Dakota battleship memorial, ate at a spectacular Italian restaurant, and enjoyed an extremely well executed meeting. The HQ was actually a SP, who did a practically perfect job! I was very impressed. I was also impressed with the Robe Ceremony and the way the three Bethels worked together as one. South Dakota was overall just a great trip! Nebraska was the next stop on the road, and what a magnificent stop it was! We were privileged to visit the Masonic – Eastern Star Children’s Home in Fremont (where Jette and I had way too much fun on the playground) and to attend the Nebraska Leadership Camp. Jette and I shared a nice room with Kelsey (Miss NE) and Kylie (GBHQ) and learned a great deal from the different workshops that were offered throughout the weekend. My favorites from the leadership camp were the scavenger hunt, the bonfire, the Jobie Family Feud game, the HIKE baking competition, and the closing worship service. Once the leadership camp ended, the fun in Nebraska was not over! We caravanned to Omaha, ate at a Runza, and visited Mother Mick’s grave. The cemetery was a touching experience. I could not believe that I was standing before our founder’s humble grave. It truly puts everything into perspective. Jette and I had a wonderful discussion about how Mother Mick would feel about our Order now. Later that evening, we visited the coolest pumpkin patch! It was called Vala’s Pumpkin Patch. They had just about everything you could imagine, from a train ride, to huge pillow trampolines, to pumpkins (of course!), to a talking dragon, and everything in between. It was an awesome time that was enjoyed by all! I even brought a little gourd home with me! To top it all off, we spent the next day at the Job’s Daughter International Headquarters. I had never been there, so it was a great opportunity. I was able to find many bricks on the International Walkway that I recognized. Seeing the artifacts and memorabilia collected over the many decades of our Order was incredible. Jette and I tried on one of the first crowns in the new sitting room and admired a few very old capes and crowns. If you ever get the opportunity to visit the International Headquarters, you must go! It would also be a great mystery trip for Bethels semi-nearby. It’s probably a shorter drive than you realize! I must say a special thank you to Shirley, GG of NE, for opening her home to us. Nebraska is doing an amazing job promoting Job’s Daughters and setting the example for the rest of us. As the birthplace of Job’s Daughters, Nebraska has many great ideas for fun, friendship, leadership, and promotion. Kansas was the last stop along the way, and what a great visit it was! We stayed at a wonderfully quaint bed and breakfast (which was an old barn!), went shopping (of course), ate at a Spangles, and attended a special meeting. Before the meeting, everyone ate a delicious meal, and after the meeting, we had delicious cake! The Grand Bethel Honored Queen presided over the meeting, during which the Supreme Family and Supreme Bethel Officers were honored. We received many sunflower gifts (my favorite!!!) and Wizard of Oz gifts. The next day we were shown around the historical room at the Grand Lodge building. This room was an extremely impressive collection of items from many different eras and locations. There was even a plate from Bethel 1 in Guam from the 1960s! After that visit, we drove to the airport and headed our separate ways. However, I was very thrown off when I checked in and saw a scuba diver! I thought to myself, “Now, why in the world is that lady wearing scuba gear? That will be very uncomfortable on the plane.” Then it hit me; it’s HALLOWEEN!! I hope everyone did have a great Halloween, and I wish everyone a blessed Thanksgiving. I am very much looking forward to our Virginia trip. Can you guess why?!?! Jette and I will be turning 19! We’re excitedly awaiting quite a celebration!!! Until next time, Jobie love, Published as received
October – BrazilSubmitted by: Brittney Utley, Miss International Job’s Daughter Greetings! The biggest adventure of this month was Brazil! On Friday, September 21, I flew from Louisville, KY to Chicago O’Hare airport to Miami, FL. There, I met up with Mom Coley, Dad Hoglund, Jette, and Marilee Smiley, Supreme Deputy to Brazil. We took an overnight flight from Miami to Sao Paulo, Brazil. The eight-hour flight was long and tedious, but somehow we managed to get a couple hours of rough sleep. When we finally landed, I was ecstatic! I kept thinking, “oh my goodness! I’m in Brazil…for Job’s Daughters…how did I get to be so lucky?” But then, I realized that we had one more flight still to make it to Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. The final landing was great! I was super excited to see that all of my luggage had managed to make it there too! So here is the rundown of activities and highlights from each place we visited: Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais: We stayed in the home of the Grand Bethel Honored Queen’s family. They took wonderful care of us and showed us great hospitality. Several of the Daughters of Minas Gerais also stayed in the home. The Grand Bethel held a special meeting in honor of the Supreme Visit. It was incredible to see so many girls in robes and to see the array of different crowns and tiaras. They also did a special ceremony that was read in both Portuguese and English. It described the history and purpose of our Order. The language and meaning were so beautiful that I could not hold back the tears. The GBHQ asked us to be at the base of the cross with her. I was deeply honored. I was overwhelmed by the deep love of Job’s Daughters that these girls posses. We attended our first BBQ. Brazilian BBQ’s are very different from US BBQ’s. First, there is a small buffet with cold foods. Then, the waiters bring around about 30 different types of meat on skewers, and you let them know what you want. They also had a dessert cart, which was amazing! The family took us to a beautiful spot that overlooked the illuminated city at night. They also took us to a town called Ouro Preto, meaning black gold. In the town, we visited a gold mining cave, a jewelry store, a self serve restaurant, an 18th Century Catholic Church completely covered with gold inside, and an open air market. It was incredible! We visited another town for a Masonic Ceremony and explored a cave. We learned how to forro (foho) dance and taught the girls how to play “spoons.” Belo Horizonte was an amazing location full of amazing people!
Cuiaba, Goias: Cuiaba was a fairly short visit. We met with Daughters at the Temple and answered some questions that they had. We also attended their Bethel meeting and held a training session afterwards. We ate incredible food, with incredible dessert! We also went to a restaurant that had a pasta bar! I had never seen anything like it, so I was excited. We went to an awesome zoo and saw monkeys, parrots, other cool birds, turtles, an anteater, crocodiles, a jaguar, a panther, an emu with babies, a giant fox, wild pigs, deer, and a peacock! We were privileged to meet with the Grand Master. The Masonic Family in Goias truly supports each other and work together very well. I was extremely impressed to see the girls hug the Grand Master when they walked in, and he asked how everything was going with them. An amazing opportunity occurred when we went to a space research facility. We saw live pictures of Brazil from a satellite and learned about the environment. The view from the facility was incredible because it overlooked the entire city. Cuiaba was a lot of fun because we were able to meet many Daughters and learn about how Job’s Daughters is doing there. Everyone was very upbeat and eager to learn how to do everything correctly.
Caruaru, Pernambuco: Congress. One word that encompasses hundreds of Filhas de Jo (Job’s Daughters) and adults all joined together to celebrate our Order and exude overwhelming enthusiasm. However, prior to congress, we stayed overnight in Recife in a hotel that overlooked the gorgeous beach! We did some souvenir shopping (I bought a hammock!) and spent the morning on a private beach. I was blown away by the sheer beauty of the sun, the sand, and the water. I even managed to take a piece of the coral reef back to the hotel. Unfortunately, the piece of coral was in my foot! That was very painful, but Dr. Jette managed to get it out the next day. Then there was Congress…. Jette and I were asked to judge the Miss Northeast pageant. I must say that this was one of the most difficult, but rewarding, things I have ever had to do in my life. SO much happened that it would be impossible to list everything. Basically, there was a training session, a dance session with the Daughters only (tons of fun and energy!!!), a meeting with hundreds of people in attendance, two chartered Bethels, one chartered JGC, a Degree of Royal Purple Ceremony, a dance/party after the meeting, and incredible friendships. It was very difficult to leave.
Rio Branco, Acre: The climate of Rio Branco was extremely different from the rest of the places we had been. It was super hot and humid! We attended a meeting, visited a rubber tree plantation, ate delicious cake at the Grand Master’s house, explored another way cool zoo, and spent a great deal of time with the Daughters. It was another short trip, but I value the time we spent there. I’ve never been so thankful to swim in a pool! We had a lot of fun at a dinner party, where we ate scrumptious chicken and rice! The Daughters were exciting to be around because they had never hosted a Supreme Visit before. So they were eager to learn the proper procedures. Before we left on our overnight flight, we went to a BBQ at the Grand Master’s home and shared stories and much laughter with the Daughters. Needless to say, it was a long night on the planes and in the airports. I didn’t feel well, so I curled up in my hammock on the floor of the airport! It was a great 30-minute nap despite the rock hard floor!
Rio de Jainero: Rio is truly one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It was a great location to end our 16 stint in Brazil. We were there for several days and saw many amazing sights. We rode a sugar loaf that overlooked the ocean. The sights simply took my breath away. From the top of the mountain, we could see the giant Jesus statue that sits atop another mountain. We saw the world famous Copacabana beach, which was as beautiful as you could imagine. However, we spent one morning at another beach that was practically deserted. I sat in the sand and reflected on our time in Brazil and thought about how incredibly blessed I am. We ate amazing food (as always!) and attended a Jurisdictional Bethel meeting that had 50+ girls present. We toured the Grand Lodge building and met with members of Bethel Guardian Councils. The Jurisdictional Bethel meeting was our last event before we went to the airport to head home. Jette and I were asked to be at the base of the cross with the JBHQ. It was the perfect way to conclude our trip because in our first location, we began at the base of the cross, and then, at our last location, we ended in the same place. I have never seen a more perfect example of an experience coming full circle.
Overall, Brazil was the experience of a lifetime. I learned that language can never be a barrier between sisters, and that is exactly what we are with those girls. We are all Job’s Daughters no matter what language our Ritual is written in. While in Brazil, there were times when I felt very frustrated because this opportunity is one that I wish more than two girls per year could experience. I will treasure forever the memories and friends that I made there. Published as received August
- Wisconsin and Minnesota
Submitted by: Brittney Utley, Miss
International Job's Daughter It
was not long after Supreme that our travels kicked into high gear! My
head was still spinning and my feet were not anywhere near the ground.
But nevertheless, I jumped in head first and set off on my first trip! During August, I have been to Wisconsin for their Jamboree and to Minnesota for their Musical Magic Camp. The Wisconsin Jamboree was held at Green Lake Conference Center in Wisconsin. Jette Brownlee, SBHQ, and I traveled with Maureen Wise, SBG, to the Conference Center after staying at her home in Milwaukee. We arrived on Friday, August 17. The Miss Wisconsin pageant and Grand Bethel are both held during this weekend. I was very excited to be asked, along with Jette, to be a pageant interview judge on Friday. That was a great privilege to meet the girls in such a capacity. We also judged the talent/variety show that evening. Immediately following, Jette and I got all done up with crazy make up to go to the Miss "Wis" contestant toga party. That was truly a hoot! Saturday morning, we woke up bright and early for the HIKE jog. Jette was not very happy to be waking up so early, so I called her "Negative Nancy." In turn, I became "Positive Polly." The walk was beautiful and such a great way to raise money for HIKE. After a quick breakfast and shower, we were ready to go the Grand Bethel meeting. Like most Grand/Supreme Bethel meetings, it was long one! But it was very cool to see the differences between Indiana and Wisconsin Grand Bethels. They also had amendments, and the protocol was followed wonderfully. I enjoy seeing passionate girls, who participate in the rules and regulations of the Order. The next major event was the Miss Wisconsin pageant on Saturday night. Wisconsin also does this very differently than any other pageant I have seen. The scores from the five categories determine the top 5 finalists. Once they are announced, each Bethel casts one vote for who they want to be their Miss. The votes are tallied and the Miss "Wis" is announced! This year, Crystal Clifton (Miss "Wis" 2006-2007) crowned Alicia Whalen from Bethel 22!
