THE SUPREME FAMILY’S TRIP TO BRAZIL

Of course the girls already have their articles posted about our travels to Brazil but the Supreme Guardian is a day or two behind!  I won’t go through the details of the travels because the girls have so very well. What I want to do is thank Brazil and to also let the people in other countries know what is working so well in Brazil that contributes to their success.

The energy level in Brazil is totally amazing.  No one is too tired to do things for you, they are the most hospitable people I have ever met, and they truly to listen to the teachings of Job and practice them every day.  Don’t get me wrong – most people in the rest of our Jobie world do the same.  But for some reason the complaints and personality conflicts do not surface when we visit.  I asked about that and they answered that they take care of that among themselves.  So this means they communicate with each other because the Supreme Guardian or Grand Guardian is so far away.

The Majority Members in Brazil are also an integral part of their organization.  When girls reach the age of 20 they don’t leave the Bethel.  They stay around to help the younger members “learn the ropes” and to be big sisters to the younger ones.  They all don’t necessarily become council members because they know that one day they are 19 – the next day they are 20.  They know that doesn’t qualify them to be immediate adults.  But they function as “big sisters” to the younger girls.  We need to learn from this because it is working very well for them.

The Brazilians are so high-spirited it is contagious!  They love the International Order of Job’s Daughters and they just want to show their love of the Order to all of us.  We all left Brazil with a renewed dedication to Jobies because of the Brazilian members.  Thank you, Daughters, for sharing your enthusiasm with us.  The hospitality was marvelous in all the states and Bethels that we visited.  We could not have had a better trip in any way (except maybe for the rain-but that didn’t even dampen our spirits or theirs).

Thanks to Denise Noonan PSG, Supreme Deputy to Brazil, for her efforts in putting the trip together.  She did a great job and we could not have done this without her!  I was concerned at first because I talked her into upgrading our seats on the flight to Brazil – to learn that we were in the coldest seats in the airplane!  I stole enough blankets to keep her warm but on the way home she wouldn’t upgrade.  Wonder why?

To all the Daughters and adults we visited in Brazil I want to thank you for your kindnesses, hospitality, gifts but most of all your friendship and love you extended to us!  I wish I could go back to Brazil – it was an amazing trip!

Jobie love,

Marilyn and Bob

LEADERSHIP WEEKEND/SUPREME GUARDIAN RECEPTION

OMAHA, NEBRASKA OCTOBER 12-14, 2008

Thanks to a great Leadership Committee, the Grand Guardian Council of Nebraska, and the YPP trainers and coordinator for putting on a very informative and fun weekend.  My goal was to have as many people attend as possible so that we could keep the costs as low as possible, put on a great leadership conference, and combine the events with the Supreme Guardian Reception.  I think we accomplished our goal!  Carol White, PGG, SD, Chairman of the Leadership Committee had a great conference agenda with sessions on leadership types, ritual revision ideas, internet safety, and sessions on the daughters’ expectations of adults concerning Youth Protection.  Her committee members, Donna Goede and Robin Henderson deserve a round of applause for the sessions they conducted and for all the other hard work they did.  The reception details were in the capable and dedicated hands of Penny Alderson, GG- Nebraska.

A large class of adults also participated in the Youth Protection Program class.  This is great so that we have more adults trained even sooner than we expected.  Thanks to Shelly Cole, Robin Henderson, and Susan Goolsby for facilitating this class.

Saturday evening was my reception courtesy of Penny Alderson, GG, Nebraska qnd the Grand Guardian Council of Nebraska.  I’d like to thank her for doing this for me.  And special thanks to my wonderful friends from Wyoming – Margie, Kathy, Maria, Shirley - who made the long trip to Omaha from the farthest corners of Wyoming.  Even though they told stories about me (some of which I had to correct a little bit) it was great to have them there with all their good wishes, help, support, and friendship!  I love all of you from Wyoming!  And of course my sidekicks, (a.k.a the supreme Family), Bob, Megan, and Jenna were there also which makes every Jobie event so special this year.

 Jobie love,

Marilyn

PHILIPPINES

What an adventure we had in the Philippines!  I won’t mention the long flight to get there and back; nor will I complain about the high temperature and humidity in the islands.  All I will say is what incredible cooperation we received from the Grand Guardian Council members of the Philippines.  Not too long ago they wanted to give up their GGC charter.  Now they have a Grand Guardian, Associate Grand Guardian, Vice Grand Guardian, Vice Associate Grand Guardian, Grand Secretary, and two standing committee appointees!

They also now have a Grand Session planned in Olongopo May 1-3 and the Session Committee was meeting as we were all eating lunch after the GGC Installation!  It truly was rewarding to have the adults volunteer to keep the jurisdiction going strong.  To Nina, Jean, Dennis, Roger, Bess, and all the others – thank you isn’t enough to say.  It was heartwarming to have a plan come together!!

Let’s not forget the work that PSG Louise Windbiel, Supreme Deputy has done.  Her love of the people of the Philippines bubbles over and she puts in countless hours working for them!

KANSAS OFFICIAL VISIT

Next in our travels we went to the Land of Oz to the fall Grand Bethel Session in Wichita, Kansas.  I visited Kansas in June and it was terribly hot then – and it was no different in September!  (Elaine – I can tell you to go to Kansas, Oklahoma, Florida, and the Philippines in Aug/Sept since you don’t like cold weather!)

We had a fun time with the Kansas delegation.  Friday evening we went to dinner with GG Donna Doll.  Congrats to Donna for battling her health problems – and winning!   And she’s always maintained her sense of humor through it all.

Saturday morning was the Grand Bethel meeting then a trip to the zoo was planned.   Wyoming readers – I finally found my spot – notice the pictures of me pointing to the bats.   The Wichita Zoo has a whole exhibit dedicated to bats.  (And I still don’t like the critters!)

Saturday evening was a picnic followed by a pool party and visits with the adults and daughters.  At every jurisdiction we visit we have had a visit with just the daughters and one with just adults.  Both sessions can be very enlightening and often very entertaining.

Now on to the Philippines!

OKLAHOMA

There is nothing like Oklahoma hospitality!  Gray and Peggy Gerow were our hosts for the official visit to Oklahoma and they certainly made us feel like family!  They organized a pizza party, a tour through the Gilcrease Museum and the Oklahoma Grand Lodge, some shopping time, and a get-together with the GGC officers and daughters that could attend on a school night.  GG Pat Stadler accompanied us on most of the visits in spite of not feeling well.  Pat, we hope you’re feeling better.

You’ll notice in the pictures that everyone helps get supper ready – even the SBHQ and MIJD.  They pitched in to help without being asked!  Thanks, girls, for setting such good examples!

Now we’ll follow the yellow brick road to Kansas.  See you there!

OFFICIAL VISIT TO OREGON

September 19 took us to the state of Oregon.  Friday night we had a dinner with all the Executive GGC officers at a restaurant that promises to give you a free dinner if you can consume 72 ounces of beef within one hour!  None of us tried it – I’m pretty sure the hospital visit for clogged arteries wouldn’t be paid by the restaurant!

All day Saturday was spent on a workshop with the Executive Grand Guardian Council officers and some committee members.  Shelly Cole was kind enough to come to Portland and lead the workshop.

Saturday evening a composite Bethel put on a ceremony commemorating 9-11.  It was very inspirational and we would like to thank the girls for taking the time to do this for us!

Sunday morning was Kelsey Rickert’s Go-to Church-Sunday.   It was great to be invited and to “hang out” with the girls.  Then it was off to the airport and………….

Now it’s on to Oklahoma and Kansas!

WA/BC INTERNATIONAL DAY

We visited the beautiful jurisdiction of Washington for International Day on September 13th.  This is an annual event between British Columbia and Washington.  They alternate the location each year so this year British Columbia Jobies and adults traveled to Washington.  We were greeted at the airport by Gerry Paul, Linda Cleveland, Minnie May, and GG Nancy Walters.  That evening ASG Bob and SG Marilyn went to dinner with GG Nancy and AGG Steve Morgan for some delightful conversations and discussions on the state of affairs in Washington.   On Saturday we also visited with the Grand Guardian of British Columbia, Isabel Parker.  Saturday morning Gerry, Linda and Minnie May gave us the tour of downtown Seattle on a beautiful “Chamber of Commerce” day.  We went to the harbor, did some souvenir shopping and watched them “throw the fish” at the markets near the harbor.  Later in the afternoon a lovely meeting was held in honor of the International Day.  A composite Bethel performed beautifully and even performed the song “You Raise Me Up” – complete with sign language.  Then dinner was served followed by a bunco tournament and sleep-over at the Bethel.  Thanks to both jurisdictions for a wonderful week-end.  It was great to see cooperation and friendship between the jurisdictions and countries.

ON WISCONSIN, ON WISCONSIN!!

Oops, that was for the Supreme Session and last year’s Supreme Guardian.  But Wisconsin was our next stop on the travels for our Supreme Team.  Since the jurisdiction had just recovered from Supreme then Jamboree we went to Milwaukee on Monday August 18th for a low-key visit.  Christal Bindrich, Acting SG and Janine Coley, PSG, met us and we spent some much needed “down time” at Christal’s house then at the motel.  We did tour the Sprecher Root Beer Factory and Colonel Bob, Jenna, and Christal went to the zoo.  Megan and the SG stayed behind that day for r & r.  Tuesday night some Wisconsin Jobies treated us to some clever skits and a mini talent show.  Thank you Christal, Janine and the Wisconsin Jobies who showed up one more time for a “Supreme” event!

 MINNESOTA:

Whatever you have heard about the fun at the Minnesota camp is certainly true.  Dee Hennebry and Larry Jensen showed amazing imagination and creativity for the “Disney Princess” themed camp.  Each day had new decorations, costumes, and some challenging activities for the four rookies at camp.  There was a dunk tank as a fund raiser for SBHQ Jenna and Jill (Jenna’s mom) doesn’t have very good math because out of eleven people who had willingly (or possibly had been coerced)  into participating only 5 had earned enough bids to be dunked.   And amazingly four of the five were the SG, ASG, MIJD and SBHQ!  But we raised a lot of money for Jenna’s travels and I believe she was the one who got dunked the most.  And then they have the famous “water weenie.”  Somehow, pictures are not available for that exercise in futility and embarrassment!  But the four of us did participate in the “Polar Bear Swim.”  That means you get up at 7:00 a.m. and go jump in the cold lake or risk being chastised the rest of the week.  But we all jumped in to quickly find out it was colder to get OUT of the water!

There is also a very moving ceremony on the last night of camp called “wishing on the waters.” I won’t describe it because I could not do it justice.  Suffice it to say there were few dry eyes at this very poignant ceremony!

Grand Guardian, Sue Goebel and Associate Grand Guardian, James McNeely are off to a wonderful year and all of us would like to thank them for their hospitality and friendship. We had a great time.  And after a harried trip to the airport we all made it on time but Col. Bob had to sleep in the Atlanta airport due to bad weather!  I think he wished now he would have missed the plane!

Now it’s time to finally go home and then the 12th of September it’s on to Washington/BC International Day.

Till next time,

SG Marilyn and ASG Bob

MICHIGAN LEADERSHIP

The 2008-2009 Supreme Team is on the road!  The first stop was Clare, Michigan for the Rotary Camp for Leadership Week-end.  The scenery was beautiful, the camp programs were planned down to the minute details, the speakers were unique and inspirational and the Michigan Jobies and adults treated us like royalty.

This was the first occasion for Bob and Marilyn to get to know their “new daughters,”  a.k.a  Miss International Job’s Daughter  Megan Semaniuk, and the Supreme Bethel Honored Queen Jenna Larson.  We were all nervous – our first official visit and the first time to become acquainted with each other.  But soon the nerves were put to rest with the hospitality and informal atmosphere.  The four of us found time to get to know each other and we found out we all LIKE each other so we are looking forward to the travels and good times ahead of us this year.

The Smileys were once again the amiable hosts that we had heard about and we had a great time at their house. We never could have known how much work they go to help out the Supreme Family.  And besides that Marilee was chairman of the Leadership Camp.  Marilee and Jeannie Link- Johnson were running from dawn to dusk tending to all the little details to make the camp successful.  Sarah Van Duinen, Grand Bethel Honored Queen offered her friendship and leadership to help keep all the girls involved in the activities.  Girls were able to do rock-wall climbing, COPE activities, swimming, and tightrope walking.  Col. Bob’s vocation (stone carving) provided to be very helpful since the ice cream was so hard he had to be a master ice-cream carver!

At the pirate-themed camp no one had to walk the plank, no mates were thrown overboard, and we left on Sunday morning tired but invigorated and excited to go the next destination.

We’ve included some photos to give you an idea of the great fun we had!   Next edition will be from Milwaukee, Wisconsin

In Job’s friendship,

Marilyn and Bob
